The Seattle Seahawks took WR Kris Durham in the 4th round of the 2011 NFL Draft

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,The Draft Report by admin on Tuesday 7 June 2011 at 4:25 pm

The Seahawks took 22-year old WR Kris Durham out of Georgia with the 107th overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.  Durham is 6’4″, 212 pounds and he runs a 4.6 40.  Durham is a tough guy as he likes to block for the running game.  He also has a great set of hands and makes the tough catches in traffic.  He doesn’t have a huge array of moves after he catches the ball.  Durham played in 11 games (8 starts) for Georgia last year and he caught 32 passes for 659 yards (20.6 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  He played in 47 games (15 starts) in his four years with the Bulldogs and he caught 64 passes for 1,109 yards (17.3 avg) with 4 TD grabs.

The Seattle Seahawks took OLB K.J. Wright in the 4th round of the 2011 NFL Draft

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,The Draft Report by admin on Tuesday 7 June 2011 at 4:20 pm

The Seahawks have taken 22-year old outside linebacker K.J. Wright out of Mississippi State with the 99th overall pick (4th round) of the 2011 NFL Draft.  Wright is 6’3″, 246 pounds and he runs a 4.7 40.  Wright is not a good pass rusher and he’s a wrap type of tackler.  Don’t expect a lot of big shots out of Wright.  He also has problems handling traffic as offensive linemen often control him when they lock on.  Wright played in 13 games (all starts) for Mississippi State last year and he had 98 tackles, 8 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks and he broke up 9 passes.  Wright played in 47 games (35 starts) in his four years at Mississippi State and he had 259 tackles, 23.5 tackles for a loss, 9 sacks and he broke up 14 passes.

The Seattle Seahawks picked OG John Moffitt in the 3rd round of the 2011 NFL Draft

The Seattle Seahawks took 24-year old OG John Moffitt out of Wisconsin with the 75th overall pick (3rd round) of the 2011 NFL Draft.  Moffitt is 6’4″, 314 pounds and he’s a very physical player.  Moffitt can handle either guard spot and he also started one year at center in college.  He played in 13 games (all starts) for Wisconsin last year and he played in 45 games (42 starts) in his four years there.  I think he will compete for and likely win a starting job in 2011 at one of the guard spots.  This was a good pick for the Seahawks who are rebuilding the offensive line.

The Seattle Seahawks select James Carpenter in the first round of the NFL Draft

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Seahawks Headlines,The Draft Report by admin on Friday 29 April 2011 at 5:06 pm

The Seattle Seahawks really reached last night by taking 22-year old G/T James Carpenter out of Alabama with the 25th overall pick of the NFL Draft.  Carpenter is 6’4″, 313 pounds, so he has the size to handle either guard or tackle in the NFL.  But, he’s likely going to take some time to develop and the coaches are going to have to get on him to keep him focused and motivated.  Carpenter played in 13 games (all starts) for Alabama last season.  He played in 47 games (all starts) in his four years with Alabama and Coffeyville Community College.  The Seahawks need help on the O-Line right now and I think they should have took someone else and waited a round or two before picking Carpenter.

The Seattle Seahawks are likely looking for more muscle in the NFL Draft

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,The Draft Report by admin on Monday 25 April 2011 at 3:31 am

The Seattle Seahawks are looking to be a more physical team in 2011, so look for them to draft those kinds of players.  Here’s a look at who I saw the Seahawks getting in my mock draft:

1st round (#25 overall) – Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida

2nd round (#57 overall) – Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia

3rd round (#99 overall) – Daniel Thomas, RB, Kansas State

5th round (#156 overall) – Byron Bell, OT, New Mexico

5th round (#157 overall) – Jack Hurd, OG, Connecticut

6th round (#173 overall) – Kendrick Burney, CB, North Carolina

7th round (#209 overall) – Taylor Potts, QB, Texas Tech

7th round (#242 overall) – Adam Weber, QB, Minnesota

The Seahawks wouldn’t get a legit QB prospect in this draft but they would get O-Line help and secondary help, which would make the team better in 2011.

The Seattle Seahawks did well last April

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,The Draft Report by admin on Tuesday 19 April 2011 at 10:35 pm

The Seattle Seahawks had a very solid draft last April.  Here’s a look at what the rookies did for the Seahawks in 2010:

Russell Okung:  The Seahawks took OT Russell Okung with the 6th overall pick (first round) out of Oklahoma State.  Okung played in 10 games (all starts) for the Seahawks in 2010.  Okung was banged up most of his rookie year but he’s already the best offensive lineman that the Seahawks have.  Look for Okung to be a Pro Bowler down the line if he can stay healthy.

Earl Thomas:  The Seahawks took FS Earl Thomas with the 14th overall pick (1st round) out of Texas.  Thomas played in 16 games (all starts) for the Seahawks last year and he had 76 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, defensed 7 passes, had 1 forced fumble and he had 5 interceptions.  Thomas is awesome already and he’s only going to get better which should scare the rest of the NFC West.

Golden Tate:  The Seahawks took WR Golden Tate in the 2nd round (#60 overall) out of Notre Dame.  Tate played in 11 games (0 starts) for the Seahawks last year and he caught 21 passes for 227 yards (10.8 avg).  Tate also had 2 carries for 4 yards (2.0 ypc) and he returned 1 kickoff for 10 yards and 16 punts for 202 yards (12.6 avg).  Tate has a nice upside and it will be up to Pete Carroll to coach him up.

Walter Thurmond:  CB Walter Thurmond came to the Seahawks in the 4th round (#111 overall) out of Oregon.  He played in 14 games (1 start) for the Seahawks last year and he had 37 tackles and he defensed 7 passes.  If Thurmond continues to improve, he’s going to be a starting corner for the Seahawks as early as the 2011 season.

E.J. Wilson:  The Seahawks took DE E.J. Wilson in the 4th round (#127 overall) out of North Carolina.  Wilson played in 2 games (0 starts) for the Seahawks last year but he didn’t have any tackles.  The Seahawks released him on November 23rd as he had problems staying healthy.

Kam Chancellor:  Strong safety Kam Chancellor came to the Seahawks in the 5th round (#133 overall) out of Virginia Tech.  Chancellor played in 16 games (0 starts) for the Seahawks last year and he had 23 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass defensed and he forced 2 fumbles.  He looks like he’ll be a starter in the Seahawks’ secondary as early as the 2011 season.

Anthony McCoy:  The Seahawks took TE Anthony McCoy out of USC with the 185th overall pick (6th round).  He played in 2 games (0 starts) for the Seahawks last year and he didn’t catch any passes.  He did return 1 kickoff for 3 yards for the Seahawks.  McCoy is one of Pete Carroll’s USC boys, so look for him to stick around for a while, even if he doesn’t deserve to.

Dexter Davis:  The Seahawks took OLB Dexter Davis in the 7th round (#236 overall) out of Arizona State.  Davis played in 15 games (0 starts) for the Seahawks last year and he had 13 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 sack and he recovered 1 fumble.  It looks like the Seahawks got a nice player in Davis, as he will likely have an increased role in 2011 for them.

Jameson Konz:  The Seahawks took WR Jameson Konz in the 7th round (#245 overall) out of Kent State.  He spent his rookie season on the Injured Reserve List but the Seahawks like his speed and versatility.

GRADE FOR THE 2010 SEASON:  B+

GRADE FOR THE FUTURE:  A+

Earl Thomas is proving to have been a smart pick for the Seattle Seahawks

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Steppin Up,The Draft Report by admin on Saturday 18 December 2010 at 7:25 pm

Head coach Pete Carroll took a lot of flak from his old safety Taylor Mays at USC because he said that Carroll promised to take him in the NFL Draft.  But, Carroll made the right choice by taking 21-year old safety Earl Thomas out of Texas with the #14 overall pick in last April’s Draft.  Thomas has played in 13 games for the Seahawks so far this year and he has 65 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 7 passes defensed and 5 interceptions.  Thomas gives the Seahawks a good player at the back end of the D to rebuild around.

The Seattle Seahawks pick TE Anthony McCoy in the 6th round

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,The Draft Report by admin on Thursday 13 May 2010 at 6:57 pm

The Seahawks have picked TE Anthony McCoy out of USC with the 185th overall pick (6th round) of the NFL Draft.  McCoy is 6’4″, 245 pounds and he runs a 4.75 40.  McCoy has a lot of untapped potential and Coach Carroll knows it from their days together at USC.  He played in 10 games (9 starts) at USC last season in which he caught 22 passes for 457 yards (20.8 avg) with 1 TD grab.  McCoy played in 40 games (22 starts) in his four years at USC in which he caught 46 passes for 731 yards (15.9 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  McCoy was a player worth taking a chance on as head coach Pete Carroll knows him better than any other NFL coach.

The Seattle Seahawks pick safety Kam Chancellor in the 5th round

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,The Draft Report by admin on Thursday 13 May 2010 at 6:53 pm

The Seahawks have picked safety Kam Chancellor with the 133rd overall pick (5th round) of the NFL Draft.  Chancellor is 6’3″, 225 pounds and he runs a 4.6 40.  He has some troubles with his pass defense so the Seahawks might think of converting him into a OLB down the road.  Chancellor played in 13 games (all starts) for Virginia Tech last season in which he had 68 tackles, broke up 5 passes, he had 2 interceptions and he recovered a fumble.  Chancellor played in 53 games (41 starts) in his four years with the Hokies in which he had 208 tackles, broke up 19 passes, he had 6 interceptions, forced 2 fumbles and he had 1 fumble recovery.  This was another solid pick for the Seahawks as Chancellor can help out at safety and OLB as well as on special teams.

The Seattle Seahawks pick DE E.J. Wilson in the 4th round

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,The Draft Report by admin on Thursday 13 May 2010 at 6:48 pm

The Seahawks have picked DE E.J. Wilson with the 127th overall pick (4th round) of the NFL Draft.  Wilson is a big end at 6’2″, 286 pounds and he runs a 4.9 40.  Wilson is a solid run defender and his pass rush is of the bull variety.  He played in 13 games for North Carolina last season and he had 49 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, he forced 3 fumbles and he had 2 fumble recoveries.  In four years with the Tar Heels, Wilson played in 50 games in which he made 150 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss, 12 sacks, he batted down 2 passes, has forced 3 fumbles and he has 4 fumble recoveries.  Wilson was a bit of a reach in the 4th round but maybe the Seahawks will be able to coach him up.
