The Seahawks have released 28-year old DT Jay Alford.  Alford played in 4 games for the Raiders last year and he had 2 tackles and 1 tackle for a loss.  He has played in 36 games in his first four years in the NFL and he has 18 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 2 tackles for a loss and 1 pass defensed.  This is no loss for the Seahawks.

The Seattle Seahawks have acquired 24-year old DT Clinton McDonald from the Bengals for 28-year old CB Kelly Jennings.  McDonald played in 8 games as a rookie last year for the Bengals and he had 4 tackles.  He will provide depth on the interior of the D-Line for the Seahawks in 2011.  Kelly Jennings played in 14 games for the Seahawks last year and he had 40 tackles, 1 interception and 13 passes defensed.  He played in 78 games in his five years with the Seahawks and he had 208 tackles, 2 interceptions, 48 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 tackle for a loss.  This was little more than a salary dump move for he Seahawks as Jennings is a much better football player than McDonald is.

Denver Broncos 23, Seattle Seahawks 20

The Seahawks looked utterly pathetic last night so it was amazing that they didn’t lose this game until the final second when Steve Hauschka nailed a 51-yard field goal.  Tarvaris Jackson was so-so in this game as he completed 13 of 22 passes for 93 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  Charlie Whitehurst finished up the game by completing 5 of 8 passes for 53 yards without a TD pass or INT.  Leon Washington led the way on the ground for the Seahawks last night with 33 yards rushing on 8 carries (4.1 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 19 yards (9.5 avg).  Justin Forsett pitched in with 23 yards rushing on 6 carries (3.8 ypc) last night.  WR Mike Williams (3 rec, 20 yards), WR Ben Obomanu (3 rec, 19 yards) and TE Dominique Byrd (1 rec, 1 yard, TD) led the way in the passing game for the Seahawks last night.  The Seahawks finished up with 58 yards rushing on 19 carries (3.1 ypc) and they also completed 18 of 30 passes (60%) f0r 125 yards as they only had possession of the football for 25:18.

WR Doug Baldwin had the most electric play of the night for the Seahawks when he returned a kickoff 105 yards for a TD.

The defense gave up a lot of yards last night.  CB Marcus Trufant (6 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 sack and 1 QB hit), safety Jeron Johnson (5 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss) and DE Lazarius Levingston (4 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks and 2 QB hits) led the way for the D last night.  DE Chris Clemons pitched in with an interception last night.  The Broncos finished up with 148 yards rushing on 34 carries (4.4 ypc) and they also completed 22 of 34 passes (64.7%) for 302 yards last night.  The Seahawks are now 1-2 on the preseason.

The Seattle Seahawks sign LB David Vobora

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk by admin on Monday 22 August 2011 at 10:34 pm

The Seahawks have signed 25-year old LB David Vobora.  He played in 14 games for the Rams last year and he had 36 tackles and 2 sacks.  Vobora has now played in 34 games in his first three years in the NFL and he has 98 tackles, 2 sacks, 5 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble and 2 passes defensed.  The Seahawks need a lot of help at linebacker so they were lucky that Vobora was still available.

UPDATE:  (9/4/2011) – The Seahawks have released David Vobora.

UPDATE II:  (9/6/2011) – The Seahawks have re-signed David Vobora.

Minnesota Vikings 20, Seattle Seahawks 7

The Seahawks were very mistake prone in this game and it cost them on the scoreboard.  Tarvaris Jackson got the start at QB and he looked pretty lousy.  He completed 11 of 21 passes for 75 yards with 0 TD passes and 1 interception which was returned 64 yards for a TD by CB Marcus Sherels of the Vikings.  Charlie Whitehurst looked pretty good in this game as he completed 14 of 19 passes for 97 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  Rookie QB Josh Portis finished up the game and he didn’t throw the ball too well as he only completed 2 of 9 passes for 13 yards.  But, he did run the ball well with 4 carries for 46 yards (11.5 ypc) in this game.  Leon Washington (4 carries, 26 yards, 6.5 ypc) and Thomas Clayton (7 carries, 25 yards, 3.6 ypc) led the way on the ground for the Seahawks in this game. TE Dominique Byrd (4 rec, 32 yards), WR Kris Durham (4 rec, 26 yards) and TE Antony McCoy (4 rec, 24 yards, TD) led the way in the passing game for the Seahawks last Saturday.  The Seahawks finished up with 150 yards rushing on 31 carries (4.8 ypc) and they also completed 27 of 49 passes (55.1%) for 181 yards in this game.

DE Raheem Brock (3 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 sack and 2 QB hits) and OLB Aaron Curry (a fumble recovery) led the way for the Seahawks on D in this game.  The Vikings finished up with 142 yards rushing on 27 carries (5.3 ypc) and they also completed 16 of 28 passes (57.1%) for 180 yards.  The Seahawks are now 1-1 on the pre-season.

The Seattle Seahawks sign safety Atari Bigby

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk by admin on Wednesday 17 August 2011 at 1:30 pm

The Seahawks have signed 29-year old safety Atari Bigby.  Bigby played in 4 games for the Packers last year and he had 6 tackles and 1 fumble recovery.  Bigby has now played in 45 games in his first five years in the NFL and he has 164 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 19 passes defensed and 10 interceptions.  This was a good pickup for the Seahawks because Bigby is a solid safety when he is healthy.

Seattle Seahawks 24, San Diego Chargers 17

The Seahawks woke up in the second half when they outscored the Chargers 24-7 to surge to a nice road win.  Tarvaris Jackson started at QB last night and he didn’t do much.  Jackson completed 3 of 5 passes for 13 yards and he also carried the ball 2 times for 12 yards (6.0 ypc).  Charlie Whitehurst followed Jackson into the game as he wasn’t bad.  He completed 14 of 20 passes (70%) for 115 yards without a TD pass or a interception.  He also carried the ball 4 times for 13 yards (3.3 ypc) last night.  Undrafted rookie QB Josh Portis injected a lot of energy into the offense when he took over under center.  Portis completed 5 of 9 passes (55.6%) for 69 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  He also carried the ball 4 times for 7 yards (1.8 ypc) last night.  Thomas Clayton led the way on the ground for the Seahawks last night with 62 yards rushing on 16 carries (3.9 ypc) with a TD run.  He also caught 1 pass for 5 yards in this game.  Leon Washington also pitched in with 23 yards rushing on 8 carries (2.9 ypc) with a TD run.  He also caught 3 passes for 11 yards (3.7 avg) last night.  TE Dominique Byrd (2 rec, 52 yards), WR Doug Baldwin (4 rec, 29 yards) and TE Anthony McCoy (2 rec, 22 yards and a TD catch) led the way in the passing game for the Seahawks last night.  The Seahawks rushed for 133 yards on 43 carries (3.1 ypc) last night which helped them have possession of the ball for 35.32 in this game.  They also completed 22 of 34 passes (64.7%) for 180 yards in this game.  The offense looked pretty good in the second half after not showing much in the 1st half.

Linebacker K.J. Wright led the way for the D last night with 9 tackles.  The Seahawks played great team D last night as they held the Chargers to 51 yards rushing on 18 carries (2.8 ypc).  The Chargers also completed 16 of 28 passes (57.1%) for 172 yards last night.  The defense was impressive but the Seahawks had trouble covering kickoffs as Chargers’ WR Bryan Walters returned a kickoff 103 yards for a TD last night.  For the game, the Chargers returned 5 kickoffs for 212 yards (42.6 avg).  The Seahawks have a lot to work on but it was nice to get a road win in the pre-season opener.

The Seattle Seahawks are going in a new direction at QB in 2011

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Positional Previews by admin on Thursday 11 August 2011 at 12:26 pm

The Seattle Seahawks quickly signed 28-year old Tarvaris Jackson when free agency opened and he will be the starting QB in 2011.  Seahawks’ offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell, had the same job with the Vikings when Jackson was with the team.  Jackson played in 3 games (1 start) for the Vikings last year and he completed 34 of 58 passes (58.6%) for 341 yards with 3 TD passes and 4 INTs (63.9 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 7 times for 63 yards (9.0 ypc) last year.  Jackson has good mobility and a strong arm, so it will be interesting to see how he handles being a starting QB once again in 2011.  Jackson has played in 36 games (20 starts) in his first five years in the NFL and he has completed 354 of 603 passes (58.7%) for 3,984 yards with 24 TD passes and 22 INTs (76.6 QB Rating).  Jackson has also carried the ball 119 times for 535 yards (4.5 ypc) with 4 TD runs so far in his NFL career.  Jackson is 10-10 (50%) as a starting QB in his NFL career.

28-year old Charlie Whitehurst comes into this season as the Seahawks’ #2 QB once again in 2011.  Whitehurst played in 6 games (2 starts) for the Seahawks last year and he completed 57 of 99 passes (57.6%) for 507 yards with 2 TD passes and 3 INTs (65.5 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 20 times for 43 yards (2.2 ypc) with 1 TD run last year.  He has now played in 8 games (2 starts) in his first five years in the NFL and he has completed 57 of 99 passes (57.6%) for 507 yards with 2 TD passes and 3 INTs (65.5 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 22 times for 56 yards (2.5 ypc) with 2 TD runs in his NFL career so far.  Whitehurst is 1-1 (50%) as a starting QB so far in his career.

24-year old undrafted rookie Josh Portis out of California (PA) has a very good shot of winning the #3 QB job for the Seahawks in 2011.  He is a great athlete who has a lot to learn about playing QB in the NFL, so the Seahawks will take it slow with him.

The Seattle Seahawks sign kicker Jeff Reed

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk by admin on Friday 5 August 2011 at 9:05 pm

The Seahawks have signed 32-year old kicker Jeff Reed.  Reed played in 14 games for the 49ers and Steelers last year and he connected on 24 of 32 (75%) field goals.  He also connected on all 32 of his extra point attempts as he finished up with 104 points last year.  Reed has played in 132 games in his first 9 years in the NFL and he has made 213 of 259 field goals (82.2%).  He also has connected on 320 of 323 extra points as he has scored 959 points in his NFL career.  Reed has made his fair share of big kicks with the Steelers so he should be able to at least perform as well as Olindo Mare did for the Seahawks.

UPDATE:  (9/4/2011) – The Seahawks have released Jeff Reed.

The Seattle Seahawks re-sign DE Raheem Brock

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Seahawks Headlines by admin on Friday 5 August 2011 at 8:59 pm

The Seattle Seahawks have re-signed 33-year old DE Raheem Brock.  Brock played in all 16 games for the Seahawks last year and he had 32 tackles, 9 sacks, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and 3 passes defensed.  Brock has now played in 136 games in his first 9 years in the NFL and he has 320 tackles, 37.5 sacks, 27 tackles for a loss, 12 forced fumbles, 16 fumble recoveries and 19 passes defensed.  This was a smart move for the Seahawks as Brock played the best football of his career in 2010 with them.
