The Seattle Seahawks sign Allen Barbre

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk by admin on Wednesday 29 September 2010 at 2:25 pm

The Seahawks have signed 26-year old OT Allen Barbre.  Barbre played in 10 games (7 starts) for the Packers last year.  He has now played in 25 games (7 starts) in his three years in the NFL so far.  This was a good signing for the Seahawks as they have had issues along the offensive line so far this year.

The Seattle Seahawks release three players

The Seahawks have released 25-year old G Mansfield Wrotto, 24-year old guard Mike Gibson and 26-year old running back Quinton Ganther.  Wrotto played in 2 games (0 starts) for the Seahawks this year and he has played in 16 games (5 starts) in his four years in Seattle.  Gibson played in 3 games (1 start) for the Seahawks this year and he played in 6 games (1 start) in two years with Seattle.  Quinton Ganther played in 2 games this season for the Seahawks but he didn’t get to touch the ball.  I don’t think the Seahawks will miss any of these guys too much.

The Seattle Seahawks sign Brandon Stokley

The Seahawks have signed 34-year old WR Brandon Stokley.  Stokley played in 16 games for the Broncos last season and he caught 19 passes for 327 yards (17.2 avg) with 4 TD grabs.  He has now played in 118 games in his NFL career and he has caught 307 passes for 4,319 yards (14.1 avg) with 34 TD grabs.  It never hurts to bring in a guy like Stokley who doesn’t mind doing the dirty work over the middle of the field.

Seattle Seahawks 27, San Diego Chargers 20

The Seahawks won this game because of Leon Washington and a opportunistic defense.  Leon Washington was the man yesterday as he returned 4 kickoffs for 253 yards (63.3 avg) including 2 of them (99, 101 yards) that went for TDs.  The 99-yarder came in the 4th quarter to give the Seahawks the final lead that the defense protected.

The Seahawks offense wasn’t very effective at all in this game as they only had possession of the ball for 23:56.  Matt Hasselbeck was so-so as he completed 19 of 32 passes for 220 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 INT.  Justin Forsett pitched in with 17 carries for 63 yards (3.7 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 31 yards (10.3 avg) in this game.   Deion Branch (5 rec, 60 yards) and John Carlson (5 rec, 61 yards, TD) led the way for the Seahawks in the passing game yesterday.  The Seahawks finished up with 68 yards rushing on 21 carries (3.2 ypc) and they also completed 19 of 32 passes for 203 yards.

The Seahawks gave up a ton of yards in this game.  Safety Lawyer Milloy led the way for the Seahawks in this game with 12 tackles.  LB David Hawthorne was also very busy in this game with 9 tackles and 1 QB hit.  Rookie safety Earl Thomas had a big game for the Seahawks with 6 tackles, 2 passes defensed, 1 QB hit and 2 interceptions (including the game sealer at the end of the game on the Seahawks’ 5-yard line!).  DE Chris Clemons (5 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks and 4 QB hits) and DT Red Bryant (4 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 2 fumble recoveries) also had big games for the Seahawks on D yesterday.  The Chargers finished up with 89 yards rushing on 21 carries (4.2 ypc) and they also completed 29 of 53 passes for 429 yards.  The Seahawks are now 2-1 on the year.

San Diego Chargers (1-1) vs. Seattle Seahawks (1-1)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Saturday 25 September 2010 at 8:01 am

The Seahawks have to be glad to be coming home after getting kicked around by the Broncos in Denver last Sunday.  The Seahawks won their first home game of the year 31-6 over the 49ers, but the Chargers are way more talented than them.  So the Seahawks can’t afford many mistakes if they are to stay undefeated at home this year.  Here is a look at the matchups:

When the Seahawks have the ball:  I know, Pete Carroll likes to throw the ball more than run it.  But if he watched a lot of game film this week he would have learned that the way to beat the Chargers is by running the football.  The Chargers allow 103.0 yards rushing and 4.1 yards per carry so far this year.  With that in mind they should give the ball 10 times each to Justin Forsett, Leon Washington and Julius Jones seeing how none of them are workhorse types.  The Chargers also have had issues with defending TEs so John Carlson could have a big game.  The Seahawks must give Hasselbeck time to throw the ball this week because the Chargers have a ballhawking type of secondary.

When the Chargers have the ball:  I don’t see the Chargers running the ball much in this game unless they get a big lead.  That’s because the Seahawks are only allowing 57.0 yards rushing and 2.0 yards per carry so far this year.  The Seahawks must get after QB Philip Rivers or they are going to have a long day as he spreads the ball around in the passing game.  The Seahawks need to pull out all of the stops against TE Antonio Gates who is still Rivers’ go-to guy in the passing game.  He also likes to throw the ball deep to his very tall WRs (Malcolm Floyd and Legedu Naanee) which is why the Seahawks must get pressure on Rivers.

PREDICTION:  CHARGERS 27, SEAHAWKS 17

Look for Golden Tate to see an increased role in the Seattle Seahawks’ offense going forward

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Steppin Up by admin on Thursday 23 September 2010 at 9:35 pm

Rookie WR Golden Tate had somewhat of a breakout game in Denver last weekend.  He caught 1 pass for 52 yards last week and he also returned 2 punts for 82 yards against the Broncos in his first NFL action.  Deion Branch leads the Seahawks’ WRs in catches with 7 and Mike Williams leads the corps in yards with 71, so I can see Tate having a big role on the team as soon as this Sunday against the Chargers.

Unlike in the season opener, the Seahawks made some huge mistakes on offense which led to this blowout loss.  Matt Hasselbeck was the biggest culprit.  He completed 20 of 35 passes for 233 yards with 1 TD pass and 3 INTs.  He also carried the ball 3 times for 21 yards (7.0 ypc) with a TD run.  Justin Forsett (8 car, 44 yards) and Leon Washington (4 car, 17 yards) led the way for the Seahawks on the ground in this game.  Rookie Golden Tate had a impressive game for the Seahawks in catching 1 pass for 52 yards and returning 2 punts for 82 yards (41.0 avg).  Deon Butler (5 rec, 50 yards), John Carlson (5 rec, 48 yards) and Ben Obomanu (2 rec, 30 yards, TD) led the way in the passing game for the Seahawks yesterday.  The Seahawks finished up with 109 yards rushing on 20 carries (5.5 ypc) and they also completed 20 of 35 passes for 230 yards as they only had possession of the ball for 22:33.

Safeties Earl Thomas and Lawyer Milloy had 8 tackles apiece to lead the way for the Seahawks on D in this game.  OLB Aaron Curry was also active with 6 tackles and 2 tackles for a loss in this game.  The Broncos finished up with 65 yards rushing on 38 carries (1.7 ypc) and they also completed 25 of 35 passes for 304 yards.  The Seahawks are now 1-1 on the year.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 17 September 2010 at 9:56 pm

The Seahawks shocked a lot of people last weekend and it will be interesting to see how they handle their first road trip to Denver to deal with the 0-1 Broncos.  The Seahawks are going to need more from the offense if they are going to be 2-0 on Sunday night.  Here is a look at the match-ups in this game:

When the Seahawks have the football:  The Seahawks should run the ball more this week against a Broncos’ D that gave up 134 yards rushing last week to the Jaguars.  Also, I think they need to pick one back and give him at least half of the carries this week.  Justin Forsett would likely be the guy to deserve the first shot.  The Broncos only had 1 sack last week and the Jaguars’ QBs had a 138.9 QB Rating so that screams that the Seahawks should pass a lot.  But, with the issues injury wise on the O-Line I think it would be smart to keep the passing game of the short variety.

When the Broncos have the ball:  The Broncos threw deep a lot last week as they were playing catch-up ball most of the game.  This week the Broncos will likely throw first to set up the running game.  WRs Brandon Lloyd, Eddie Royal and Jabar Gaffney don’t scare anyone but Orton was efficient throwing the ball last week.  Knowshon Moreno needs to get his career going on the right path so the Seahawks will be dealing with a motivated RB.  But, the Seahawks stuffed Frank Gore and the Niners last week holding them to 49 yards rushing on 19 carries (2.6 ypc).

PREDICTION:  BRONCOS 20, SEAHAWKS 17

Mike Williams is going to try to make the most of his chance with the Seattle Seahawks

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Steppin Up by admin on Friday 17 September 2010 at 9:17 pm

When Pete Carroll got the head coaching gig with the Seahawks you just knew he was going to bring in a couple of his USC players.  I did not think that 26-year old WR Mike Williams was going to be one of them.  He had been out of the league since 2007 when he played with the Raiders & Titans.  He was a first round pick (#10 overall) of the Detroit Lions in 2005 but he only lasted two years there.  Williams played in 30 games in his NFL career prior to this year and he had caught 44 passes for 539 yards (12.3 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  Williams came to training camp and earned a starting job with the Seahawks independent of his ties to coach Carroll.  He then went out and caught 4 passes for 64 yards (16.0 avg) for the Seahawks in the season opener.  The Seahawks hope that Williams will take advantage of what is really his fourth chance in the NFL.

The Seattle Seahawks lose Max Unger for the season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Injury Reports by admin on Wednesday 15 September 2010 at 8:20 am

The Seahawks have lost 24-year old starting right guard Max Unger for the year due to a toe injury.  Unger has started all 17 games in his first two years with the Seahawks.  Either Mike Gibson, Stacy Andrews or Chester Pitts will get the call in Unger’s place.  This is another downgrade for the O-Line that’s already playing without rookie LT Russell Okung.
