The Seattle Seahawks sign RB Louis Rankin to the practice squad

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk by admin on Wednesday 30 September 2009 at 9:26 am

The Seahawks have signed 24-year old RB/KR Louis Rankin to the practice squad.  He played in 2 games for the Raiders this year but he didn’t have any carries.  He did return 6 kickoffs for 108 yards (18.0 avg) this season.  The Seahawks probably brought in Rankin for insurance on the special teams with Josh Wilson out of action due to injury.

Seattle Seahawks 19, Chicago Bears 25

Blogged under Bloglockers,Game Recaps,General Hawks Squawk by Andrew on Sunday 27 September 2009 at 9:11 pm

The depleted Seattle Seahawks (1-2) put up a very strong effort against the Chicago Bears (2-1) today, but missed field goals and turnovers cost them the game.  Missing seven starters they played well enough to win this game, but with Olindo Mare missing two field goals along with two costly 3rd quarter turnovers in their own zone, the Bears were able to capitalize and win.

Seneca Wallace filled in today at quarterback for the injured Matt Hasselback.  Wallace did a pretty good job today, except for the one costly turnover when Bears’ linebacker Lance Briggs dove and caught Wallace’s forced pass at the Seahawks’ 14-yard line.  He was inconsistent at times with his accuracy, as he went 26/44 for 261 yards and a touchdown.  Wallace did a good job of escaping the Bears pressure, and hooked up with Nate Burleson a lot.  Burleson had 9 catches for 109 yards, but the Seahawks did not make enough plays when it mattered.

Running back Julius Jones played very well for the Seahawks, as he ran for 98 yards on 19 carries (5.2 avg) and also had three catches for 38 yards.  The Seahawks played pretty well considering all the injury problems they are having.  This is the NFL though, and all teams have to deal with injuries.  The Seahawks ultimately lost because of lack of execution on field goals and too many turnovers, but they really do need to get healthy.  They take on Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts next week in Indianapolis.

Seattle Seahawks vs Chicago Bears preview

Blogged under Bloglockers,General Hawks Squawk,If I Were a Betting Man,This Week's Matchup Report by Andrew on Friday 25 September 2009 at 5:57 pm

The Seattle Seahawks (1-1) are hosting the Chicago Bears (1-1) Sunday at Qwest Field and are looking to bounce back after a tough 23-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.  It looks like starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will not be able to go, as the broken rib that forced him out of last weeks game is probably going to keep him out of this one as well.  That means the inexperienced but very athletic Seneca Wallace will be starting for the Seahawks.  This will be Wallace’s 13th start of his seven year career and he has been pretty inconsistent throughout those starts.

The Seahawks will also be without their middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu, which is not a good sign for the Seahawks as the 49ers Frank Gore destroyed the Seahawks defense on the ground last week.  Luckily for the Seahawks the Chicago Bears’ Matt Forte has not done much this year and is averaging 2.2 yards per carry.  Forte is a good player though, so don’t be surprised if he has a break out game against the Seahawks depleted and weak run defense.

Jay Cutler looks like he has settled in as the Bears quarterback after he lead them to a 17-14 win over the defending Super Bowl Champion Steelers.  He looked terrible in his first start though, as he threw a career high four interceptions against the Green Bay Packers.  The Seahawks better hope that the Jay Cutler vs the Packers shows up or they are in trouble.  With Hasselbeck out and the Bears’ defense looking solid, I don’t think Seneca Wallace will be able to do much.  Cutler looked strong last week and Forte is going to attack their weak run defense, so it doesn’t look like the Seahawks have enough to beat the Bears this week.

FINAL SCORE PREDICTION:  Bears 27, Seahawks 17

The Seattle Seahawks lose LT Sean Locklear

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Injury Reports by admin on Wednesday 23 September 2009 at 11:19 am

The Seattle Seahawks have lost LT Sean Locklear indefinately with a high ankle sprain.  The Seahawks have their fingers crossed that Walter Jones will be ready to return to action this week.  If not, Matt Hasselbeck/Seneca Wallace could be getting hit in the back quite often.

The Seattle Seahawks lose CB Josh Wilson

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Injury Reports by admin on Wednesday 23 September 2009 at 11:17 am

The Seahawks will be without starting QB/KR Josh Wilson for the next 4-6 weeks due to a high ankle sprain.  He has made 6 tackles and defensed 3 passes so far this season.  Wilson has also returned 5 kickoffs for 99 yards (19.8 avg) so far this year.  Kelly Jennings will likely replace Wilson at CB and he has six tackles this year.  This will be a dropoff for the Seahawks.  RB Justin Forsett could replace Wilson on kickoff returns and he will do a good job.

Who will start at QB this week for the Seattle Seahawks?

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Injury Reports by admin on Wednesday 23 September 2009 at 11:14 am

The Seahawks will likely wait until near game time to annouce a starting QB against the Bears.  Matt Hasselbeck fractured a rib on a running play last week when 49ers’ linebacker Patrick Willis laid the wood to him.  Still, a gimpy Hasselbeck would likely give the Seahawks a better chance to win than a healthy Seneca Wallace.  Hasselbeck has completed 35 of 54 passes (64.8%) for 376 yards with 3 TD passes and 2 interceptions (88.2 QB Rating).  So Hasselbeck is off to a solid start to the season and the Seahawks need him if they are going to be a playoff team.  Seneca Wallace did a decent job replacing Hasselbeck against the Niners as he completed 15 of 23 passes (65.2%) for 127 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception (75.8 QB Rating).  Wallace is a so-so QB who is very streaky.

San Francisco 49ers 23, Seattle Seahawks 10

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General Hawks Squawk by admin on Monday 21 September 2009 at 1:08 pm

The Seahawks got beat up in San Francisco yesterday.  Matt Hasselbeck completed 10 of 18 passes for 97 yards before leaving this game with a fractured rib.  Seneca Wallace replaced him and he completed 15 of 23 passes for 127 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception.  Justin Forsett led the Seahawks in rushing with 35 yards on 5 carries (7.0 ypc) and he also caught 6 passes for 57 yards (9.5 avg).  The Seahawks finished up with 283 total yards on offense (66 rushing, 217 passing) in this game.

The Seahawks’ D was pretty bad in this game.  Frank Gore shredded them finishing with 207 yards on 16 carries (12.9 ypc) with TD runs of 79 and 80 yards!  Safety Jordan Babineaux (8 tackles) and DE Lawrence Jackson (4 tackles, 2 sacks) led the way for the D.  The 49ers finished up with 379 total yards in this game (256 rushing, 123 passing).  The Seahawks are now 1-1 on the season.

Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 18 September 2009 at 2:02 pm

The Seahawks pounded the 49ers 34-13 the last time these two teams played in San Francisco.  In fact, the Seahawks have won 5 of the last 6 meetings between these two teams in San Francisco.  The Seahawks would like to have the balance they had against the Rams last week (34 runs, 36 passes).  The Seahawks would like to run the ball with Julius Jones and Edgerrin James against the Niners but that will be easier said than done.  MLB Patrick Willis is a absolute beast in the middle of the defense for the Niners who only allowed 40 yards rushing on 17 carries (2.4 ypc) last week against the Cardinals.  The Seahawks will likely keep the passing game short to TE John Carlson and WRs Nate Burleson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

The 49ers want to get back to running the ball despite only getting 21 yards rushing on 25 carries (0.8 ypc) against the Cardinals last week.  The Seahawks only gave up 77 yards rushing (4.3 ypc) last week to the Rams but that won’t stop Frank Gore from getting a lot of carries.  QB Shaun Hill will likely have some success throwing the ball as long as the O-Line gives him time.  WRs Isaac Bruce and Josh Morgan could have decent games against the Seahawks this week.  The Niners are also trying to keep TE Vernon Davis involved in the passing game and that will likely continue this week.

PREDICTION:  49ERS 17, SEAHAWKS 16

John Carlson is off to a good start for the Seattle Seahawks

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Steppin Up by admin on Friday 18 September 2009 at 9:27 am

John Carlson had a amazing game against the Rams last Sunday as he caught 6 passes for 95 yards (15.8 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  Carlson is quickly turning into Matt Hasselbeck’s favorite receiver in the passing game.  Carlson has now played in 17 games in his NFL career and he has caught 61 passes for 722 yards (11.8 avg) with 7 TD grabs.  He is a nice weapon to have on offense especially with the O-Line problems the Seahawks are having due to injuries.

The Seattle Seahawks lose LeRoy Hill for a while

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Hawks Squawk,Injury Reports by admin on Tuesday 15 September 2009 at 6:38 pm

The Seahawks will be without starting OLB LeRoy Hill for at least the next couple of weeks due to a groin injury.  Hill had 2 tackles against the Rams in the season opener before he was injured.  Hill has now played in 57 games in his NFL career and he has made 331 tackles, has 13.5 sacks, he has defensed 11 passes and forced six fumbles.  Hill will be replaced by D.D. Lewis in the starting lineup.  Lewis played in 14 games (2 starts) for the Seahawks last season and he made 45 tackles.  The Seahawks will miss Hill’s big play ability while he is out.

UPDATE:  Hill will now miss at least the next six weeks and his groin could require surgery which would keep him out a lot longer.  This is a big loss for the Seahawks.
