The Seattle Seahawks feel better about their QB situation this year than last season

The Seahawks had to wonder how bad they would be if Matt Hasselbeck went down to injury.  Last season, Hasselbeck missed four games due to injury and Seneca Wallace stepped up and kept the team on the track to the playoffs.  Hasselbeck started 12 games last season and he completed 210 of 371 passes (56.6%) for 2,442 yards with 18 TDs and 15 INTs (76.0 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 18 times for 110 yards (6.1 ypc).  Hasselbeck played injured most of last season and he’s had corrective surgeries in the off season so the Seahawks expect him to play to his previous levels.  Hasselbeck has played in 119 games (80 starts) in the NFL and he’s completed 1,552 of 2,576 passes (60.2%) for 18,367 yards with 114 TD passes and 72 interceptions (85.1 QB Rating).  He also carried the football 207 times for 802 yards (3.9 ypc) with 5 TD runs.

Seneca Wallace is a fantastic athlete but many questioned whether or not he had the skills as a passer to succeed if called upon to play.  But Wallace did a much better job than most expected he would do and that has cemented his status as the Seahawks’ #2 QB.  He played in 8 games (4 starts) last season for the Seahawks and he completed 82 of 141 passes (58.2%) for 927 yards with 8 TD passes and 7 INTs (76.2 QB Rating).  He also carried the football 12 times for 122 yards (10.2 ypc).  Wallace really has improved as a QB and a lot of the credit should go to Mike Holmgren who has really coached up a lot of QBs over his career.  Wallace has now played in 15 games (4 starts) and he’s completed 95 of 166 (57.2%) passes for 1,100 yards with 9 TD passes and 8 INTs (75.4 QB Rating).  He also has carried the football 18 times for 117 yards (6.5 ypc).

7. (232) Steve Vallos, OT

Most experts didn’t have Vallos getting drafted because of his lack of speed and size for the tackle position.  Vallos plays hard though and he might be able to make it as a center or guard where he would get more help from his teammates.  Vallos was a 4-year starter at Wake Forest so it will be hard for him to adjust to all of the time he will be spending on the bench early on in his career.  He’s 6′3″, 305 pounds but he’s not especially strong and he’ll need to work hard in the weight room to make it in the NFL.

6. (210) Jordan Kent, WR

Jordan Kent is an outstanding athlete.  He was a track and basketball star at Oregon that really didn’t play football until his senior season.  Kent is 6′3″, 209 pounds and he runs a 4.43 40 so he has the speed to get deep.  Kent caught 47 passes for 605 yards (12.9 avg) with 5 TD grabs at Oregon.  He also ran one reverse and he gained 22 yards on it.  Look for Kent to be mostly used on special teams as a rookie but he could develop into more if he progresses well with the coaching he’ll get from the Seahawks.

6. (197) Courtney Taylor, WR

The Seahawks were pleased to see Courtney Taylor available in 6th round after they had traded Darrell Jackson to the 49ers.  Taylor has excellent size at 6′1″, 200 pounds and the only thing that keeps him from being an elite receiver is his 4.63 speed.  Taylor played in 50 games (32 starts) at Auburn and he caught 153 passes for 2,098 yards (13.7 avg) with 9 TD grabs.  Look for Taylor to be the #4 or #5 WR with the Seahawks as a rookie but he will move up the depth chart in time.

5. (161) Will Herring, OLB

Will Herring is a converted safety that only has one year of experience at linebacker.  The Seahawks will need to coach Herring up as he has problems making open field tackles but he is a very gifted athlete.  Herring is 6′2″, 229 pounds and he’s fast as he can run a 4.57 40.  Herring played in 53 games (49 starts) at Auburn and he made 250 tackles, 16 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks, forced a fumble, recovered 4 fumbles, broke up 9 passes and had 8 interceptions.  Look for Herring to be a backup and a special teams player as a rookie.  He could develop into a starter if he starts tackling better.
